A 16th century inn which started life as a farm is up for sale.

The West Arms in Llanarmon DC, near Llangollen, is being offered for sale through agents Christie & Co.

Set in the Berwyn Mountains, The West Arms has been owned by vendors Geoff and Gill Leigh-Ford since 1999.

Originally a farm, the site later became a drovers’ inn known as The Eagles where cattle drivers would rest their livestock on their way down from the Welsh hills.

It was afterwards renamed The West Arms when it was sold to landowner Mr Cornwallis West.

Llanarmon game shoot is hosted by the McAlpine family, whose guests often stay at The West Arms during the shooting season, which contributes to the winter trade.

The hotel has 16 individually-designed rooms ranging from doubles and singles to large suites with split level accommodation and exposed beams.

The inn also hosts a lounge bar and original public bar known as ‘the Wayfarers’ for non-residents including walkers, bikers and foodies who visit for meals and refreshments.

Having a civil licence means weddings and functions can also be catered for in a suite which overlooks the Berwyns.

Keith Stringer, associate director in Christie & Co’s Manchester office, said: “Alongside the property’s golden history, The West Arms has gained recognition in recent years in travel guides, newspapers and hotel awards lists.

“The restaurant is consistently included in the prestigious Good Food Guide with head chef Grant Williams having appeared in numerous TV programmes including ITV’s Britain’s Best Dish where he reached the finals in December 2011. He has even been chosen to cook for Prince Charles.”

Christie & Co is marketing the freehold of The West Arms at an asking price of £695,000.
