A TREE-MENDOUS scheme will help to boost the look of a Vale of Clwyd town.

Ruthin will be a greener place soon with an environmental community project planned at Llanfwrog Community Centre.

During the summer the Mayor, Cllr Heather Williams, started to make contact with various organisations in the town to encourage tree planting.

As a result of this, Llanfwrog Community Centre was successful in an application to the Woodland Trust for 420 large saplings which will encourage wildlife.

The species will be a mixture of hawthorn, rowan, blackthorn, silver birch, hazel and common oak.

Cllr Williams said: “I put the Ruthin Friends of the Earth group in touch with the community centre and they have now organised the planting of the trees on Saturday, November 13.

"I am really pleased that by creating this partnership there will be a significant living legacy for future generations.”

Rod Bowden, a trustee for the centre, added: “The tree planting will be along boundaries in the main to re-establish previous tree planting, create natural habitat corridors and establish copses in the foot golf area softening the impact of fencing and buildings.

"Whilst the number of trees we will receive may seem excessive, it will be a small amount in 25 acres. Essentially we will still have the rolling hills on view."

Mair Davies, of the Friends of the Earth, said “Tools and instruction will be provided but if you can bring your own spade or shovel this would be helpful.

"Please dress sensibly for the task and the weather.

"Anyone interested in the planting is most welcome to participate which takes place between 10am and 2pm.”
