AN environmental cause has offered a financial boost to a Denbighshire park.

The charity and volunteer-run children's playground and community park in Llanferres has been awarded a £1,000 grant from Earth Hour funding from World Wildlife Fund Cymru.

This will go towards building a timber shelter in the park on which to site a solar panel with USB chargers, bug hotels and a bird box with a web cam.

The shelter and features will be built under supervision by 11-18 year olds from the community to learn new skills as well as instil a sense of ownership and community involvement.

Chairman of the charity, Sean Thomas, said: "It's great to see the commitment from the youngsters of the village.

"The grant awarded by WWF Cymru has allowed us to support Earth Hour by building a new timber shelter on the park where we will locate a solar panel donated by Hafod Renewables.

"This will provide carbon-free power to mobile devices and run a webcam of a bird nesting box and bug hotels.

"We're proud to play a part and hugely grateful to Hafod Renewables for their support and advice, and WWF Cymru".

Earth Hour is the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment.

At 8.30pm on March 26, the call is for everyone to take an hour to connect – with nature, their community and with people around the world - and switch off their lights to show they care about the future of the planet.

People can connect with hashtags #EarthHourWales and #AwrDdaear, with further information available from www.earthhour.org

Mr Thomas added: "We've also recently had great success with other grants from National Lottery and Clocaenog Wind Farm Community Funds for redevelopment of the playground and park and we'll announce more on that in the coming weeks.

"All of this success is under-pinned by the strength of the Llanferres and wider community, especially our volunteers at general maintenance working parties and our fund raising activities, especially those run during Covid restrictions."

The next general maintenance working party is scheduled for 10am on Saturday, April 10.
