Ruthin primestock sale - April 1

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 802 prime hoggetts to £130 / 295ppk, 399 ewes to £210 and 53 store pigs to £130.

Prime hoggs (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

A total of 802 prime hoggets were forward today and it was a sharper trade again, with an SQQ of 264.6ppk.

Top priced: 52kg at £130 by D E Owen, Golygfar’r Dyffryn; 49kg at £129 by AL Jones & Sons, Ty’n y Celyn; 46kg at £123 by R D G Hughes, Ty Cerrig.

Top priced per kilo: 40kg at 295ppk by H L Griffiths, Ty Isa; 39kg at 294.9ppk by Ryan Fowlie, Hafod Abbey Farm; 35kg at 294.3ppk by M Evans, Tan y Garth.

Super Lights to 220ppk, av 220ppk; Lights to 282.5ppk, av 258.8ppk; Standards to 294.9ppk, av 272.8ppk; Mediums to 295ppk, av 269.5ppk; Heavies to 266ppk, av 250.5ppk; Overweights to 229.1ppk, av 214.7ppk; SQQ 264.6ppk; Overall average 268.8ppk.

Cull ewes (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

A good trade throughout with a top price of £210 twice going to Gop Farm for Texel and Beltex ewes.

A total of 399 ewes and rams entered.

A smaller entry of pigs on show.

Less weaners about, usually a result of increased farm-to-farm trading.

As usual predominantly boars out, but nevertheless a sharper trade with prices as follows:
Gilts to £130 by R G Thomas, Y Wern; Boars to £100 by R G Thomas, Y Wern; Sows to £98 by HD & EM Roberts, Ffrith; Weaners to £32 by W A Roberts, Mynydd Mawr.

St Asaph livestock market - March 31
THE auction reports sales of 93.97 Welsh Naked Acres and 25.68 Welsh Basic Payment Scheme Entitlements.

Welsh Naked Acres topped at £70.00 per acre.

There was a sale total of £6,467.24, with a sale average of £68.82 per acre.

This is the highest sale average seen since the auction started trading Welsh Naked Acres in 2006!

A total of 24.80 Welsh Basic Payment Scheme Entitlements were sold and 0.88 Welsh Basic Payment Scheme Entitlements were leased.

Sale averages: £58.00 per Entitlement for the sold units and £20.00 per Entitlement for the leased units.

The next sale is on April 7.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 29 heifers to £1390; 59 steers to £1590; 74 calves to £350; 18 stirks to £890; 10 OTMs to £1441.30 / 214ppk; 111 store lambs to £99; 89 ewes and lambs to £275; 36 pet lambs to £22 and five dairy cattle to £1800.

Store cattle (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

A reduced entry of 116 store cattle forward with entries of younger cattle just holding on for the time being.

An entry of stronger cattle on the day met a very good trade with some of the prices as follows:

Heifers:

Top price of £1390 went to ST & EM Roberts & Sons,Caerfaemaeth for a 20 month Lim.

23 month Charolais to £1350 by H E Morris, Cader; 28 month BB to £1140; 13 month Lim £1275; 22 month WB £820; Overall average £1044.48.

Steers:
Top price of £1590 went to D S Parry Jones, Pentre Farm for a 23 month BB.
21 month Sim to £1460; 20 month Lim to £1380; 17 month Char to £1290; 21 month Hereford to £1330; 17 month AA to £1180; 13 month Lim to £1285; 14 month Charolais to £1210; 24 month BF to £750; Overall average £1074.66.

It was predominantly a show of dairy cross, with a brisk trade throughout.

Dairy cattle (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

The monthly sale attracted plenty of interest, with the introduction of online bidding also encouraging competitive bidding.

A very satisfactory trade with many buyers commenting on the firm trade.

Freshly calved heifers from D T Jones, Bryn Rhydd sold to £1800 with Holstein Friesian in calf heifers selling to £1500 from J & TR Jones, Golf Links.

Entries now being taken for the April sale.

Strong bull calves remained the order of the day with younger sorts also in keen demand.

Top price went to P&L Jones, Gables selling a BB bull to £350 with others to £345, £335.

Weanlings (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

Top price went to EW & IN & GE Jones, Ysgeibion with a 10 month AA bullock to £890.

Others: 12 month Lim bullock £825; 6 month HF bull £365.

More required on a weekly basis.

Ewe and lamb couples (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

Less couples about due to the weather, but still a good trade.

Stronger lamb couples selling well with younger ewes coming out.

A total of 140 couples already entered for next week.

Top price of £275 went to Sam Taylor, Old Mill Farm for Texel twins.

Singles: Average £121.10; Lleyn to £200; Charollais to £158; Texel to £152; Suffolk to £162; Mule to £152; Crossbred to £162; Welsh to £85. 

Doubles: Average £214.30; Lleyn to £270; Texel to £275; Mule to £160; Crossbred to £262; Welsh to £115; Beltex to £235; Overall Average £152.52.

Pet lambs:

From £2 to £22, average £14.61.

Coming to the end of the store lambs now, but everything still sellable.
Top price of £99 went to JG & EV Roberts, Simdde Hir for Lleyn ewes lambs.
