FIREFIGHTERS have been praised for their work in tackling a major blaze in Denbighshire.

Fire personnel from nine different areas joined forces to tackle a huge forest fire near Corwen on Saturday afternoon.

The fire was at Cynwyd Forest.

A spokeswoman for the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 2.27pm to a fire in the open in Cynwyd Forest.

"Our crews left last night (Monday) and we have one officer inspecting the area today."

Rich Fairhead said: "Great job by our crews yesterday evening, overnight and this morning dealing with a fire in the forestry near Corwen.

"Positive partnership work to resolve the incident effectively - including the helicopter - pleasure to see Wrexham, Corwen and Abergele crews with (area manager) Paul Scott."

Mr Scott said: "Another busy day for North Wales crews and control.

"Great job everybody, let’s hope the rain continues overnight."

Several fire crews and a helicopter were called in to help extinguish the blaze in an overnight effort.

Firefighters from Cerrigydrudion, Bala, Ruthin, Johnstown, Corwen, Porthmadog, Blaenau Ffestinog Abergele and Wrexham teamed up to help tackle the fire.

The helicopter was used to drop water on the area of land affected.

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "One fire appliance, two Pinzgauer appliances and two wildfire vehicles were also in attendance."

The fire sevice said one fire appliance and two wildfire vehicles remained at the incident throughout Sunday, with crews returning on Bank Holiday Monday to carry out reinspections at the site.

The cause of the fire is yet to be revealed .
