RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,155 prime lambs to £123 / 292.9ppk and 282 ewes to £122.

Prime lambs (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

Friday numbers still gathering momentum week-on-week with 1,151 lambs forward on the day to a pleasing SQQ of 241ppk.

Over 500 of those forward would be 36kg or under, returning at 238ppk with the medium and heavy lambs averaging 243ppk.

42kg at £123 by G M Jones, Plas Onn; 48kg at £122 by D Roberts, Cornel y Cae; 58kg at £120 by J G Rich & Son, Erw Goed.

Top priced per kilo:

42kg at 292.9ppk by G M Jones, Plas Onn; 34kg at 272.1ppk by C A Jones, Ty Nant; 39kg at 271.8ppk by H L Griffiths, Ty Isa.

Lights to 242.9ppk, av 232ppk; Standards to 272.1ppk, av 238.2ppk; Mediums to 292.9ppk, av 243.5ppk; Heavies to 254.2ppk, av 243.6ppk; Overs to 218.2ppk, 212.4ppk.

Top priced ram: £120 for a Beulah rams from IT & HM Jones, Rhiwlas.

Top priced ewe: £122 for Texel ewes from M Dowell, Plas Morfa.

Texel to £122; Mules to £93; Welsh to £75; Crossbred to £85; Cheviot to £75; Beulah rams to £120; Lleyn to £80.

Overall average £56.62.

Ruthin store and breeding sale - August 11

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 10 cows & calves to £1820; 25 heifers to £1440; 31 steers to £1395; 26 OTMs to £1547 / 258ppk; 38 calves to £380; 38 stirks to £685; 531 store lambs to £87 and 1178 breeding ewes to £300.

Store cattle (auctioneer-Richard Lloyd):

A good weekly show of store cattle for the time of year and trade was very much the same with power to a premium and longer term cattle going to less hands, but still a fair trade and sold.

A tally of 25 heifers topping at £1440 for a 25 month Lim heifer from G M Jones, Cae March.

26 month BB-£1175; 25 month Sim-£1160; 17 month Lim-£1065; 12 month BB-£710.

Overall average £982.

A total of 31 steers forward topped at £1395 for a 20 month BB steer from HE & DE Morris, Gydros.

A cracking average but a cracking run of powerful steers to sell on the day, all very much in demand.

26 month Lim-£1285; 22 month AA-£1220; 26 month Blonde-£1200; 23 month Hereford-£1000.

Overall average £1225.65.

There's no sale this week, but people can go and see the auction at their stand at the Denbigh and Flint Show for some refreshments.

There is already a good entry of store cattle for August 25.

A total of 26 barren cows forward, with some prices as follows.

Top price went to T H Roberts, Bachymbyd, for a 74 month Lim (700kg) at £1547.

Top price per kilo also went to T H Roberts, Bachymbyd, a 34 month Lim (570kg) at 258ppk.

Fleshier, stronger cattle were on fire.

Plenty of demand for those stronger with strong calves.

Top price went to Davies, Bryn Cnap with Lim 2nd calvers and Charolais bull calf at foot selling to £1820.

Others:

Simmental 3rd calvers with Simmental heifer calves at foot sold to £1760.

Calves (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

Trade on par to the previous week with buyers possibly more selective when purchasing.

Top price went to Jones, Rhydwen Farm selling a Sim bull to £380.

Others:

BB bull £355; AA bull £270; Lim heifer £280; Hereford bull £235; HF bull £125.

Weanlings (auctioneer-Dafydd Parry):

Dairy bred older type cattle a real good trade.

Suckler bred younger types a firm trade.

Top price went to Williams, Hendre, Betws selling 14 month old Lim heifers to £685.

Dairy bred:

13 month old Lim bullock to £600; 4 month Lim bullock £480; 4 month Lim heifers £450; 4 month Flek heifers to £405; 4 month Sim heifers to £405; 6 month BB heifer to £535; 16 month Jersey bullocks to £370.

Store ewes (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A full ringside of buyers at the new sale hall saw 1155 store ewes sold to a flying trade on stronger types.

Strongest Texel x Mule yearling ewes from £178 to £198, similar with the strongest Suffolk x Mules.

Consignment of pedigree Charollais ewes from D Williams, Criccin hitting top price of £300 with commercial Texel x Charollais ewes from J Finney at £220.

Full mouth ewes from £76 to £156.

Vendors are advised to contact the auctioneers to enter breeding sheep for the next sale on August 25.

Store lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A total of 488 store lambs forward on the day, still a bit of resistance in the trade with the weather conditions.

Nevertheless, there's a customers for everything at a price.

Top price went to I C Edwards, Oaks Farm, selling Black Welsh Mountain ram lambs to £79.50.

Crossbred ram lambs to £80; Cheviot ram lambs to £78; Texel ram lambs to £73.50; Welsh ram lambs to £61; Suffolk ram lambs to £59; Suffolk ewe lambs to £63.50; Mule ram lambs to £79.50.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 2420 prime lambs to £139 / 335.1ppk and 783 ewes to £140.

Prime lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A tally of 2,413 lambs forward on the day and trade on par with other centres. A terrific show of 1,407 medium lambs stealing the show at 251ppk.

More heavy and overweight lambs about than in recent weeks, averaging 240ppk.

Standards 240ppk and very few lights at 232ppk.

Best of the pick still £125 to £139.

The warm weather and grass shortage resulted in a lot of leaner grazing ewes forward, which surprisingly sold well.

In contrast to previous weeks, heavier and fat ewes harder to sell.

Top price for the ewes went to Nia Davies, Ty Gwyn, at £140 for a Texel ram.

Bluefaced Leicester ram to £124; Mules to £105; Beltex ewes to £99; Cheviot ewes to £92; Crossbred ewes to £85; Beulah ewes to £80; Tal y Bont ewes to £80; Welsh ewes to £76; Lleyn ewes to £74.
