RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,889 prime hoggets to £134 / 318.5ppk and 558 ewes to £158.

Prime hoggets (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

Fewer hoggs were on offer on the day as expected with the trade to an SQQ of 228ppk or an overall average of 227ppk.

Less medium lambs in the entry (726) commanding the best of the trade at 234ppk.

A higher percentage of heavy and overweight hoggs compared to previous weeks.

Top 10 per cent of the hoggs probably dearer on the week.

Despite the slipping trade, the numbers continue to come in well with another show just shy of a 1,000 hoggets.

The usual mixed show of lambs with an SQQ on the day of 214.2ppk.

A great entry of cattle selling exceptionally well with more required to meet the demand!

All shapes, sizes and ages competed for and exceeding expectations.

A tally of 81 heifers forward with an overall average of £1122.22.

Top price of £1470 went to R P Jones, Isgaer, selling a 25 month Lim.

As per previous weeks, older cattle met a firm trade, with dairy types looking particularly well sold.

Top price went to H P Roberts, Bryngwyn selling a 8 month old Charolais bullock to £895.

9 month Lim heifer £780; 16 month AA heifer £770; 15 month Char £720; 13 month old Lim bull £700.

Trade was on fire!

Freshly calved met a fantastic trade with a ringside full of buyers.

If anybody has any to sell, they should get in touch with the auction.

Holstein Friesian 2nd calver from Wiliams, Clwch Dernog Bach sold to £2600 with another close behind selling to £2450.

Holstein Friesian heifers sold to £2,300 £2,100 and £2,050.

British Friesian x Holstein Friesian 3 month old heifers sold to £300.

A brisker trade on the day met with steady demand for younger ewes.

Older and upland ewes were harder to sell.

Top price of £225 went to W Williams & R Ioan, Ty Hen for Cheviot x Mule yearlings scanned at 166%.

Beulah x Mule yearlings scanned at 168% selling to £168.

Welsh x Mule yearlings scanned at 150% selling to £138.

Tal y Bont Welsh yearlings scanned at 170% selling to £143.

Texel x full mouth ewes scanned at 160% selling to £162.

Aberfield 4&6 tooth selling to £145.

Overall average £137.65.

A total of 1,330 store lambs with a consistent trade all through.

A larger entry of longer term lambs as to be expected, with the strongest lambs still looking well sold considering the fat trade.

Top price went to H E Morris, Cader achieving £99 for Texel ram lambs.
