RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,898 prime hoggets to £150 / 308.9ppk and 608 ewes to £150.

Prime hoggets (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

Just short of 1,900 lambs on the day and what a difference in the trade!

SQQ of 254ppk or overall average of 249ppk.

Medium weight lambs were leading the way at 258ppk, but there was a welcome lift in all weight categories.

A few less in numbers on the day met a slightly sharper trade and an SQQ of 219ppk.

Smaller Welsh lambs were a pound or two over the £2 mark with the standards and mediums selling best on the day.

Heavy lambs were slightly cheaper on the week.

Top priced ewes went to DV & EF Jones, Ty’n Llanfair, at £117 for a pen of Texel ewes.

Welsh to £60; Crossbred to £80; Mule to £63; Lleyn to £88; Cheviot to £68; Romney to £68; Bluefaced Leicester to £96; Dorset to £90.

Overall average £43.80.

Store pigs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A total of 103 store pigs forward on the day, with exceptional quality throughout, and a well-rewarded brisk trade.

Noticeable lift in the trade of store pigs with the strongest pens of boars up to £150, strongest Gilts to £165.

Best of the weaners to £48, generally up about £8/£10 on the well-bred types.

Cull boars still impossible but cull sows sharper at £75 to £125.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 17 OTMs to £1,896.60 / 270ppk; 56 heifers to £1,540; 117 steers to £1,700; 25 stirks to £1,005; 26 calves to £310; 880 store lambs to £107; 146 breeding ewes to £220; 95 ewe & lamb couples to £315 and 11 pet lambs to £31.

Store cattle (auctioneer-Rich Lloyd):

Another weekly entry of over 200 stores and what a trade!

A tally of 215 in total with a the ringside chock-a-block with buyers.

In all, 56 heifers forward, with an overall average of £1166.94.

Top price of £1540 went to D Jones & Son, Plas Isa, selling a 16 month Charolais.

Others:

20 month Lim £1430; 16 month Lim £1350; 12 month Lim £1330; 17 month Char £1310; 21 month BB £1180; 8 month Char £1100; 26 month AA £960.

A total of 117 steers forward with an overall average of £1268.16.

Top price of £1700 went to H G Williams, Tan Dderwen, selling a 22 month Charolais.

Some excellent cattle on offer on the day, but all types, shapes, sizes and ages were keenly fought for and in demand.

A total of 17 forward and they continue to sell exceptionally well.

Top price went to DW & GB Roberts, Cornwal Ucha, with a 130 month Lim weighing 870kg selling for £1896.60.

One of the dearest trades witnessed within the weanlings section.

Competitive bidding on each and every one.

Top price went to H P Roberts, Bryngwyn selling a 8 month old Char bullock to £1005.

11 month Lim bulls £995; 10 month Lim bulls £965; 11 month Lim bullock £995; 9 month Saler bullock £935; 11 month BB bullock to £895; 9 month Lim heifers to £785.

In lamb ewes (auctioneer-Paul Roberts):

Hardier breeds forward with a good trade on good condition ewes.

Welsh Mountain 3 year old ewes scanned for twins to £85.

Cheviot x Nelson mixed ages scanned for triplets to £140.

Mule 4&5 year olds scanned 165% to £135.

Blue Texel 2 yearling scanned for singles to £220.

Overall average £90.45.

Store lambs (auctioneer-Elfor Morris):

A total of 880 store lambs forward on the day, with quite a mixed entry in general.

Longer term lambs went to fewer homes as expected at this time of the year, and probably look well worth their money from £68 to £60.

Top price went to R Gwynedd Jones, Orsedd achieving £107 for Texel ewe lambs.

Strong couples sold well once again with younger lambs harder to place.
