AN ARTS and crafts business has applied for permission to renovate Ruthin’s former Conservative Club.

The now-vacant Conservative Club on Well Street is set to be transformed into an arts and crafts studio, following an earlier planning application for a change of use being granted.

But Ruthin-based Lavinia Stamps has also now submitted an application to Denbighshire’s planning department seeking permission to renovate the building known as Plas Coch, which is listed with heritage guardians CADW.

Consequently special permission is needed before work can begin.

The planning application has been submitted by Tracey Dutton of Lavinia Stamps who wants to relocate her business from its existing premises at Lon Parcwr, Ruthin.

The business makes hand-drawn, finely detailed polymer stamps and sells art and crafts equipment but wants to extend the business to offer workshops for customers.

As part of the application, Ms Dutton wants to make internal and external alterations and improvements to the building.

Prior to 1977 the premises was used as a banqueting hall.

The building’s origins date as far back as the 13th century before it was rebuilt using red sandstone retrieved from Ruthin Castle in 1613 as lodgings for the Constable of Castell Coch.

In the planning application, Ms Dutton explained how she hoped to expand her business.

“Those visiting the existing premises (or buying online) have the opportunity to purchase art and craft items in the retail area, but Lavinia Stamps is keen to assist customers in the development of their art skills, offering craft workshops, open days, and online tutorials,” the application reads.

“The company is keen to retain its growing business within Ruthin, as well as to offer a wider range of activities to the local community and considers that the application premises are ideal for that purpose.

“Plas Coch is a memorable Listed building in the streetscene, prominently integrated within the established town centre and has significant historical associations with Ruthin.”

The statement concludes: “It is highly accessible and offers sufficient accommodation to serve future business and community needs. It also has its own car park to serve customers and visitors as well as a good off-road service area.”

The planning application will be debated at a future Denbighshire planning committee meeting.
