A POLITICIAN continues to call for action to be taken on road and has voiced the need for improvements yet again, following another crash.

The crash happened on the Lôn Fawr and Corwen road junction on Tuesday, June 27.

Darren Millar, MS for Clwyd West, is urging the Welsh Government to take make improvements at the junction.

Raising the matter in the Business Statement in the Welsh Parliament, Mr Millar said: “There's been yet another dangerous accident on the A494 trunk road in my own constituency, on the Lôn Fawr and Corwen road junction. There was a scheme that was planned to improve the safety of that junction, but, regrettably, the Welsh Government scrapped the scheme as part of its roads review earlier this year.

“The person involved in the accident was taken in an air ambulance to hospital [sic]; I don't know what the situation is in terms of that individual's health, but I'm sure all of us would want them to recover very, very quickly. 

“Clearly, this is a junction that continues to be dangerous, that continues to require some investment from the Welsh Government, and I'd like an urgent statement from the Deputy Minister with responsibility for the trunk road network to make sure that this work is done as a matter of urgency, given that we've had yet another accident on this road.”

The Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said they were called at 8.28am on Tuesday, June 27, to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a van on Lôn Fawr in Ruthin.

A paramedic in a rapid response car attended the scene as well as an emergency ambulance and an air ambulance.

One person was taken by road to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

Lôn Fawr and Corwen Road are gateways into Ruthin and part of a key circular route for traffic and residents, but parts of Lôn Fawr are dangerously narrow.

Mr Millar feels the junction with Corwen Road needs re-engineering to improve safety.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Millar, who last year launched a petition in a bid to get the Welsh Government to carry out the improvements to the road, said: “This stretch of the A494 poses a serious risk to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians and I am regularly contacted by local residents raising concerns.

“Despite my repeated calls for improvements, we are still in the same position with accidents continuing to happen. What will it take for the Welsh Government to recognise the seriousness of this situation?

"They are putting lives at risk every day.”
