A CAFÉ in Ruthin has been handed a food hygiene rating of one, with a spokesperson saying the score is “very disappointing”.

Chain & Sprocket, at Unit 1a Hen Lon Parcwr, was given a one-out-of-five score after assessment on July 4.

The report into the business rated its management of food safety ‘major improvement necessary’, its hygienic food handling was rated ‘improvement necessary’ and the cleanliness and condition of its facilities and building was rated ‘generally satisfactory’.

Management of food safety refers to the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and inspector confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

A spokesperson for the Chain & Sprocket told the Denbighshire Free Press: “This is the first that we have heard about our inspection - we haven’t received any correspondence from the council yet.

“We will undoubtedly be requesting another inspection.

“It is very disappointing to find out what our inspection score is.”

The cafe added they felt there was a lack of communication regarding the score and lodging an appeal, and that they were not informed before it was published.

However, food hygiene ratings are public record and can be accessed by anyone.
