Ruthin Festival is off to a fantastic start with events planned right up until Saturday's big Top of the Town finale.

The 30th anniversary of the week-long cultural celebration kicked-off with a concert by the sensational Pedair and Eryrod Meirion last Friday.

Though the weekend more amazing music as Cymanfa and local choirs took to the stage on Sunday before the youth concert took place on Monday.

"We now have Talwrn y Beirdd on Wednesday at the Feathers Bar, and the Top of Town and Storming the Castle gigs on Saturday," said Festival Chair Gwion Tomos Jones.

The Top of Town event on the town square will feature bands and artists such as Bwncath, Band Pres Llareggub, Fleur de Lys, Shambolix, Geraint Woolford, Tocsidos Bler plus local schools and choirs.

One of the most eagerly anticipated acts for the show is the Bagad bagpipe band from Brittany.

The event, supported by sponsors KMT, runs from 1pm-8pm with entertainment afterwards in Ruthin's pubs. Entry to the Top of Town event is £5 per adult with children free. The festival bar will once again be on Market Street, with an activities area in the grounds of St Peter's Church.

The Storming the Castle gig will take place at Ruthin Castle’s Dragon Tavern on Saturday night the 29th. Performers will include Elidyr Glyn from Bwncath, Hen Fegin folk band, local choir Meibion Marchan and members of the Bagad bagpipe band from Brittany.

"We are particularly pleased to welcome the Bagad to the Top of Town event and the Castle gig," said Festival committee vice-chair Jim Bryan.

"Many people are also looking forward to the performance of the band ‘Taran’ a new band from Ysgol Brynhyfryd created by its Battle of the Bands project."

The Battle of the Bands is a cooperation between Ruthin Festival, Ysgol Brynhyfryd, Denbighshire Music Cooperative and Menter Iaith Dinbych where young people at the school were given the opportunity to join a band and each was tutored by local musician Morgan Elwy.

Three bands competed in a Battle of the Bands with their own songs composed with support from Morgan, with Taran being chosen as the winners.
