A NEW accessible play park is due to be installed at Cae Ddol in Ruthin as part of an Accessible Play Area Provision project.

Denbighshire County Council’s Accessible Play Area Provision has received £300,000 from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund to deliver accessible play provision in two locations, with Cae Ddol being the first to undergo construction.

The construction of the new play area will begin on July 1 (weather-permitting), with the play park remaining closed for a period of up to eight weeks while the works take place.

While the existing main play area next to the car park does have an accessible roundabout, there is currently no other provision for accessible play.

The roundabout will be incorporated into the new play area design, with all other pieces being replaced, and the whole area resurfaced with a more suitable wet pour safety surface.

A new active zone is also being created with new equipment to be installed include spinning turbo bars, group pendulum swing, curved climber, hexagonal bars and a giant hammock with new pathways between the structures for easy access.

Discussions are currently taking place as to the exact location for this zone, with the options being next to the play area across the river or the open space area between the skate park and the pathway, which would be the preferred area to join the overall master plan for Cae Ddol.

Paul Jackson, Denbighshire County Council’s head of highways and environmental services, said: “It is important that all children, no matter what their abilities, have the freedom to be able to use public play areas without worry that they will be unsuitable for their needs.

“Our accessible play area provision is a big step in helping to ensure that we as a council are able to provide accessible play for all.

“I am delighted to hear that the work to install this much needed facility at Cae Ddol will begin soon.

“This is the first of two sites identified in Denbighshire that will undergo these vital improvements and I am certain that these changes will be a welcome addition to the town for the benefit of all children in the area and their families.”
