SPEED cameras are being sent out onto North Wales' roads to help maintain safety as traffic increases heading into summer.

Speeding is one of the largest contributing factors to collisions on Welsh roads according to GoSafe - a partnership of authorities including the Welsh Government and emergency services.

Cameras are typically deployed to hotspots where accidents are common or safety is paramount, such as near schools.

GoSafe say vehicles are staffed by fully trained Police staff or Police Officers, who watch the speed of vehicles passing the vans.

Not only is speed dangerous but it can land you a fine and three points on your licence.

The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points.

If police believe a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit, they use the on-board Speedscope equipment in order to verify and record it as evidence.

All offences are recorded onto digital storage cards and sent to the Central Ticket Office for processing.

Speedscope can be trained on vehicles up to 1,000 metres away, although most work is carried out far closer to the enforcement vehicle.

The time, date, speed, distance, site coding and whether the vehicle is travelling towards or away from the checkpoint is recorded on the image to produce to the offending driver when the penalty is issued.
