A TOTAL of 14 pupils have been excluded from schools in Denbighshire during the last two academic years, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has shown.
The FOI request, submitted to Denbighshire County Council, also revealed that, in the same two academic years, a total of 1,256 suspensions have been issued to pupils.
These can be broken down into the following categories:
- 2022-23 academic year – seven permanent exclusions, 731 suspensions.
- 2023-24 academic year - seven permanent exclusions, 525 suspensions.
There were 14,996 pupils attending Denbighshire schools in 2022-23, and 15,012 pupils in the county in 2023-24.
The council said it could not provide information for each individual school in the county, but said the aforementioned exclusions and suspensions were handed out for the following reasons:
- Bullying
- Damage
- Drug- and alcohol-related
- Other (not specified)
- Persistent disruptive behaviour
- Physical assault against an adult
- Physical assault against a pupil
- Racial abuse
- Sexual misconduct
- Theft
- Verbal abuse/threats to an adult
- Verbal abuse/threats to a pupil
