Denbighshire staff have now left the main council offices in Denbigh, but footfall could soon be restored in the market town with several organisations reportedly interested in the building.

The Caledfryn offices were purpose-built for the-then fledgling authority over 25 years ago, but the council confirmed it was moving staff out of the building in June, following a review of its property portfolio.

The building is now on the market with Legat Owen handling the sale.

Staff have been moved to Russell House in Rhyl or County Hall in Ruthin.

But Denbigh councillor Mark Young was hopeful the building could soon be filled and believed several parties were interested.

“Obviously it is always sad when people have been moved, but it is not sad when something positive comes out of it,” said Cllr Young.

“I believe there are lots of people interested in the building, and I think something positive can come out of it. So yes, it’s sad, but we can’t be downhearted.

“We must think positively, and I hope an organisation takes it over that can bring something required by the community, and obviously fill the building so the footfall doesn’t drop. But the building has become more and more empty since lockdown, so obviously the council has had to look at the cost of consolidating, but I think there is an opportunity, so I would urge anyone interested in the building to come forward because Denbigh is a great place to be located, and it would be great for the town.”

He added: “So let’s stay positive and hope the right organisation takes over.”

A Denbighshire County Council spokesman commented: “Denbighshire County Council has vacated the office space in Caledfryn in Denbigh as part of its strategy to rationalise assets, and staff are now working at other council sites in the county.

“The council has been working with partners to make arrangements for the future use of the site and to ensure it benefits the town. As part of this process, the site will be put up for sale by informal tender by Legat Owen from early August.”

Built on land previously used as a shirt factory and an agricultural market, construction of Caledfryn offices was completed in 1998 after Denbighshire County Council was formed in 1996.
