TENANTS have been forced to leave their homes after a burst water main sent thousands of gallons of water flooding into private rented apartments near Llanrhydd.
On Monday evening 13 residents of flats at Bathafarn Hall had to leave their belongings and relocated as water poured into their flats. Now they say they are waiting to find out what happens next and whether they will be able to return.
Patrick Dunbar, who only moved in six weeks ago, said he was inundated with sewage water and suffered thousands of pounds of damage to new furnishings.
"I moved in a few weeks ago," he said. "Obviously I got new furniture to spruce the place up, but that's all been destroyed.
"It's devastating. The water main seems to have been up the hill towards the main house and has flowed down. I was in a ground floor flat and it was us on the lower floors that were hit.
"The water at its worst was about a metre deep in the apartment.
"Dŵr Cymru have put us up in temporary accommodation until Monday but we want to know what happens next? I've spoken to the landlord and he's not been able to give us much more information as it's the water company's responsibility.
"People want to get back into their homes, they want to know how the water company will make this right and quickly."
Mr Dunbar said he was also keen to know whether it was likely to happen again.
"One of the other residents told me this was the third time in 10 years this has happened. I don't know about that but I do know since it happened people have been talking about how long it will take for this to be made right for the people affected.
"There are people saying nine months and lots of rumours, what we need are some answers so people can sort themselves out.
"Dŵr Cymru have done the first bit, getting us into temporary accommodation. But now they need to let us know what's happening and keep us updated because even with help, living with this uncertainty is stressful and expensive."
Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: "People could have died.
"The sewage was coming up through the toilet, the sink and the windows. It's been really stressful. I'm sitting here living out of two bags of clothes. The place is absolutely devastated, I've been made homeless as have other people."
A spokesperson for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water said: "We can confirm there was a burst main in Llanrhydd, Ruthin, on Monday evening.
"Some properties near the burst were affected by the water escaping from the damaged main. We are dealing with the affected customers directly to ensure they are supported and have organised alternative accommodation for them."
