HOW can Ruthin make more of its European links with twin town Briec?

Town residents are being asked to bring ideas to an open meeting on Wednesday, October 23 to see how the two historic towns can take their relationship to the next level.

Ruthin has been twinned with Briec in Brittany since 1993 and over 31 years have paid numerous successful visits to each other, including earlier this year when Ruthin hosted 40 Bretons and their pipe band The Bagad –  during the Ruthin Festival.

However, since the pandemic those visits have been fewer and now Ruthin Mayor Cllr Jabez Redfern Oakes has called meeting to explore how to strengthen the connection between the two towns.

"Since Covid, many organisations have had the chance to reflect on their organisation and purpose. Seeing the recent focus around a cultural event, it is easy to see how the Twinning Association can be taken forward into the future following the many years of devotion by the current leadership," he said.

"After a successful visit by the Bretons to Ruthin this past summer and with an increased level of interest, now is the chance to see what can be done to improve Ruthin’s link with Briec.

"We must of ensure the towns' valuable links and cultural exchange continue into the future."

The impact of the twinning on Ruthin can be found in many places, such as the naming of its main roundabout. A number of groups and organisations from Ruthin have visited Briec, including Côr Rhuthun and Ruthin Rugby Club.

The meeting will take place at the Old Courthouse in Ruthin Town Centre from 7pm. All are welcome to attend.
