Farmers in North Wales are being encouraged to enter the Welsh Livestock Champion of the Year competition.

Sam Rowlands, member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is backing the search for the 'Livestock Champion' by NFU Cymru and NFU Mutual.

The shadow minister for local government said: "We all know that Wales produces some of the best quality beef and lamb in the world and I believe it is a great idea to recognise the skills of those people who look after our cattle and sheep.

"I am a very keen supporter of Welsh farmers and happy to highlight all the hard work they do to keep the nation fed.

"I would certainly urge livestock producers in my region of North Wales to enter the competition or nominate someone they know for this prestigious award."

The Welsh Livestock Champion of the Year award is looking for its tenth winner to highlight the dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm of livestock workers across Wales.

The winner will receive a top prize of £500 and a Welsh Royal Crystal Trophy.

Rob Lewis, chairman of NFU Cymru’s livestock board, said: "In Wales, we have some of the best quality beef and sheep in the world, produced to the highest animal health and welfare standards.

"This award aims to celebrate excellence amongst Welsh livestock producers."

The contenders will be judged on various aspects including their management of the flock/herd, animal health planning, breeding programme, stock handling skills, adherence to health and safety, and their vision for the future of the industry.

Mike Thomas, Builth Wells NFU Cymru / NFU Mutual group secretary, said: "Welsh farmers are amongst the best stock people across the world and this competition does a great job in showcasing and celebrating their skills."

The closing date for entries is October 28, and the winner will be announced at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells on November 25.
