DENBIGH High School is closed to pupils today (October 24) after a gas leak at the premises yesterday.

The school was evacuated at 3.15pm yesterday after what it described as “a strong smell of gas”.

It was initially anticipated that the school would be open today, but it is only open to staff.

A letter to parents and carers from the school’s headteacher, Glen Williams, which has been shown to the Free Press, read: “There was a gas leak in school this afternoon that led to the school being evacuated just before the end of the school day.

“Unfortunately, the school will be closed tomorrow as the building won’t have a gas supply whilst the problem is fixed. We are hopeful that the school will be open on Friday as usual.

“As learners were unable to go back to the building, some learners have belongings still in the classrooms. They are able to collect these between 9.30am and 11.00am tomorrow if they come to the main reception.

“If they are unable to do this, they will have to collect their belongings before registration on Friday morning.

“Learners in Years Seven to Nine can work on their homework vocabulary, researching the terms and revising them in their Knowledge Expert Books.

“Learners in Years 10-13 will have work set on Google Classroom for any lessons they have that day or, if they do not have a Google Classroom for that subject, work will be sent to you via School Comms.

“I will be in touch tomorrow with any further updates.”
