HALLOWEEN comes home this evening as Ruthin Gaol features on S4C’s new ghost hunting series, Cysgu Efo Ysbrydion (Sleeping With Ghosts).
Made in partnership with S4Cs youth production platform Hansh, presenter Iwan Steffan joins TV personality and paranormal sceptic Aimee Lauren Fox to spend a night at the gaol for a Halloween special.
Cysgu Efo Ysbrydion sends Steffan and Aimee to some of Wales' oldest or most 'haunted' buildings in the hopes of capturing a supernatural experience on camera.
As the gaol’s gates closed, the ghost hunters stayed behind accompanied by two members of the Ruthin Gaol team.
Ruthin Gaol's history makes it ripe for stories of ghosts and hauntings. The most famous ghost believed to reside in the gaol is William Hughes - the only inmate executed there.
He is believed to haunt the condemned man’s cell, where models depict the scene of his last night in the cells. A motion sensor that triggers the gaol tour commentary in the room is often set off when nobody is near the room.
Another William, prison guard William Kerr, is also believed to roam the halls. In life he vanished one day during his rounds and was never found, believed to have been killed by inmates who he had mistreated.
A young girl’s laughter is often heard throughout the jail too, although there is no substantive story behind why. Another commonly reported phenomenon is heavy prison cell doors slamming shut with no explanation. This has even been reported by some to happen consecutively running down the hall.
Find out for yourselves if Iwan and Aimee witnessed any paranormal activity on S4C tonight at 10.20pm.
