DENBIGH Town made history at the weekend by reaching the fourth round of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time in 52 years.

Dewi Llion’s side defeated Llanrwst United 3-0 at Gwydir Park on Saturday, thanks to goals from Nathan Brown, Owen Davies and Keelan Williams.

Llanrwst put Denbigh under pressure early on, but Denbigh struck first with Brown finishing well following impressive play by Ben Lockley.

Lockley then came to the away side's rescue, blocking to deny Llanrwst an equaliser before a Cal Butler block stopped an effort from Julian Williams.

Llanrwst were on top for the duration of the first half, with Williams again denied and Math Hughes' effort superbly saved by Denbigh goalkeeper Luke Wilmot.

Denbigh could have doubled their lead after the break, with Mackenzie Stark's volley on the turn saved by Llanrwst goalkeeper Cian Williams.

After a number of close chances, substitute Tom Salisbury won the ball in Llanrwst’s half before finding Davies, who smashed home Denbigh's second after a one-two with Sam Duffy.

Denbigh now had the initiative, and pushed forward for a third goal with Williams hitting over and Duffy also lifting a shot over the bar.

Morgan Fricker and Gabriel Hinchcliffe came on for their Denbigh debuts before Duffy was brought down in the box by Chris Nicholson.

Nicholson was shown a straight red card and the referee pointed to the spot - Keelan Williams stepped up to make it three and send Denbigh safely through to the next round.

Denbigh Town will now compete in the fourth round of the competition for the first time since the 1972-73 season.
