AFTER achieving promotion back to tier three at the first time of asking, Corwen started their season with a Welsh Cup tie victory at Lex XI.

Corwen were hoping for better fortunes at Stansty Park, as their three visits to this ground last season saw them suffer a penalty shootout defeat to Coedpoeth United, who also won the league tie 3-1, while in the game against Lex the hosts earned a share of the spoils with a ninetieth minute equaliser.

Early on in the game Sam Henry, making his first completive appearance since returning to the club, had a good opportunity to open the scoring, but sent his effort just over the bar.

In the 10th minute there was a mix up at the back, which allowed Cameron Thomas to line up a shot; however the Corwen defence were able to recover and block the shot.

Then, 15 minutes later, the ball was squared to Lex’s Ricky Evans in space, who was only able to send the ball over the bar.

On the brink of half-time Tom Williams played to ball to Tom Weyman, who went for goal from the edge of the Lex box, but floated the ball over the bar.

After the break Scott Evans was able to find Les Brophy’s head from a corner, but the Corwen defender could only head the ball over the bar.

Just before the hour mark, Corwen were awarded a free kick on the edge of the D, which Sam Henry hit into the wall, leading to the ball going wide to another Corwen player, who played it back to Sam, whose cross found its way to Henry Evans via a deflection, enabling him to hit an angled shot into the far corner of the net to break the deadlock.

Corwen doubled their advantage when Henry Evans played the ball to Kieron Day, who crossed the ball to Sam Henry, who slotted the ball home.

A minute later, the home side halved the deficit when Joshua Phillips played a corner into the Corwen box, where Ashton Williams was on hand to head the ball home.

The away side looked to restore their two-goal advantage when Matthew Williams stuck his leg out to get on to the end of a cross; however, goalkeeper Joey Jones was able to collect the ball.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, the hosts completed the comeback when Joshua Phillips leathered a free kick at the Corwen goal, which curled beyond the reach of goalkeeper Niall Coolings.

With Welsh Cup games going straight to penalties if the scores are level at 90 minutes, new Corwen manager Adam Galdo may have started thinking about his choices for penalty takers.

That was until the 82nd minute, when a Corwen attack bore fruit when Henry Evans was able to add an assist to his goal when he was able to find sub Tom Mann, who was able to find the back of the net, which proved to be enough to book Corwen a place in the draw for the next round.
