BRO Gwernant have bounced back to claim their first win of the season in WRU League Division Three (North East).
The Llangollen-based side travelled to Bala 2nds looking to end a poor run of results in the league and they returned having gathered a 26-10 success.
The Bro side went into the game knowing they required a much-needed win to get their season started and the players showed the right attitude from the start.
Bala were always going to be a tough nut to crack and that was obvious from the physical battle in the first 10 minutes, with much of the play in the middle third of the pitch.
The breakthrough came with some good play out wide and some good footwork from number eight Will Bowen got him over the line for an unconverted try.
With Bro now on the up, scrum half Aled Bates was dictating play and getting the ball out to the back line and this proved effective with Owen Jones running in a second try to give the visitors a 10-0 lead.
However, Bala weren’t going to lie down and they responded.
The score came with a pick up at the back of the scrum and they were able to power over the line for a converted try before the break.
The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with it being a bit of a scrappy affair.
Bala conceded two quick penalties and Iestyn Hughes stepped up and put the kicks over the uprights to move Bro further clear.
The visitors didn’t look back from this position, with another penalty being kicked and the ever impressive Will Bowen showing some pace to pounce on a kick through to score the final try of the game.
Iestyn Hughes added the conversion to see Bro through to their first victory since gaining league status this year.
“Really proud of what the lads achieved," said Bro Gwernant manager Huw Evans.
"We have had a difficult run of fixtures, playing some top teams, but we have all stuck together and worked hard in training.
"Gwyndaf Davies, our head coach, took us back to basics in training and that definitely came through in the game.
"The only sour note from the day is we lost our flanker Billy Davies to a shoulder injury.
"We all wish him well and a speedy recovery.”
